The update has a swag of new features, giving photographers even more professional control over their shooting process.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what\u2019s new:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A live image histogram with shutter speed and ISO readings<\/li>\n<li>Separate lock or unlock of exposure and focus in Expert Mode<\/li>\n<li>ProFX is now faster.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a photographer, I\u2019m most excited by the addition of a live histogram with real-time ISO and shutter speed readings.\u00a0 The histogram has been custom-built by our developers to give you precise control over your exposure settings.\u00a0 To our knowledge, ProCamera is also the first camera replacement app to give you live histogram warnings when your image is over or underexposed.\u00a0 This is particularly helpful for preserving highlights (light areas) in your photos.<\/p>\n<p>For those who are unfamiliar with histograms or are unsure how to use them, here is a quick tutorial of how they can help you to take better photos.<\/p>\n<p>A histogram graphs the light levels in a photo. \u00a0As shown by the gradient bar below, a histogram starts from Black (shadow areas) on the far-left all the way to white (highlights) on the far-right.\u00a0 The areas in the middle parts of the histogram are often refered to, unsurprisingly, as \u2018midtones\u2019. \u00a0The height of each column shows the number of pixels at each step between black and white.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Example-histogram.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2973\" title=\"procamera-histogram-example\" src=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Example-histogram.png\" alt=\"procamera, procameraapp, app histogram, photo app histogram, live iphone histogram, photo app histogram\" width=\"600\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The images below show the shadow (under) and over (highlight) exposure warning bars.<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"308\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Shadow-warning1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2983\" title=\"Shadow-warning\" src=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Shadow-warning1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"308\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/highlight-warning.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2975\" title=\"highlight-warning\" src=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/highlight-warning.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"308\">The left warning bar is indicating that part of the image is underexposed.<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"308\">The right warning bar \u00a0is indicating that part of the image is overexposed (otherwise known as a blown highlight).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Now for some pictures, here is the same image exposed in three different ways, resulting in three different histograms. The histogram shows that most of the image data is in the middle-left section, with a small amount of data in the highlight area on the far right. Critically, the red warning bar is telling us that we are losing highlight detail on the building and that we need to drop the exposure a little.<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"205\">Here I\u2019ve exposed for the sky, this time nearly all the histogram data is on the left side \u2013 telling me that most of the photo is dark and the exposure needs to be lifted a little.<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"205\">In this final example, I\u2019ve placed the exposure circle on the car; the histogram is telling us that there is detail in the shadows, midtones and highlights without any data being lost.\u00a0 You can clearly see that the exposure is far more balanced than the other two.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><em>Note: Did you also notice the difference in the shutter speeds between the three images? \u00a0The first was the lowest at 1\/148 sec and the second the highest at 1\/1341 sec \u2013 a ten times faster shutter actuation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I hope that quick histogram rundown was helpful.\u00a0 One important thing to remember is that a histogram is only a guide when shooting. There are no \u2018perfect\u2019 exposures and your eyes will always be the best tool to decide whether a photograph looks good or not.<\/p>\n<p>Next week I\u2019ll show you how to use the other new feature in ProCamera 3.7 &#8211; the advanced focus and exposure control locks &#8211; to improve your shooting control in certain environments.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d love to know how you use the live histogram as part of your shooting process.
