{"id":4220,"date":"2013-06-21T23:15:55","date_gmt":"2013-06-21T21:15:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.procamera-app.com\/?p=4220"},"modified":"2026-02-17T15:12:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-17T14:12:18","slug":"five-tips-for-capturing-unique-architectural-photos-with-an-iphone-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/procamera-app.com\/en\/blog\/five-tips-for-capturing-unique-architectural-photos-with-an-iphone-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Five tips for capturing interesting architectural photos with an iPhone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_4022_lowres.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4222\" title=\"IMG_4022_lowres\" src=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_4022_lowres.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While I\u2019m a street photographer at heart, I often find myself drawn to the structure and form of architectural photography.\u00a0\u00a0 In this article I want to share a few tips that help me when I\u2019m looking for interesting buildings to photography<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>\u00a0Create drama through interesting light and shadow<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I mostly shoot in the late afternoon when the light is more directional &#8211; resulting in deeper shadows and richer colours.<\/p>\n<p>In the example below I\u2019ve placed the exposure point on the brightest part of the scene \u2013 the edge of the large white wall in the centre of the frame.\u00a0 The slight underexposure helps isolate certain shapes and saturate the rich tones in the sky and building facades.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_3977_lowres.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4223\" title=\"IMG_3977_lowres\" src=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_3977_lowres.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"361\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Fix your perspective<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest challenges with shooting tall structures is the way they can lean towards each other, resulting in perspective distortion.\u00a0 One way to fix perspective is to get higher up in the scene.\u00a0 This way you\u2019re shooting it straight on rather than tilting your phone upwards. If you don\u2019t have a lift handy, another option is to use a perspective adjustment app such as Perspective Correct (Disclaimer: I\u2019m the co-developer the app).<\/p>\n<p>With Perspective Correct you can swipe the screen the control the amount of horizontal and vertical correction applied to the photograph (as shown in the screencap below).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4224\" title=\"IMG_4360_lowres\" src=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_4360_lowres.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"361\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here is the before and after image. Can you see the improvement?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Before<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_3978_lowres.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4225\" title=\"IMG_3978_lowres\" src=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_3978_lowres.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<strong>After<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_4022_lowres1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4226\" title=\"IMG_4022_lowres\" src=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_4022_lowres1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Look for reflections and patterns<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As you can see in the image above, the reflection form the neighbouring building has created interesting diamond shapes on the fa\u00e7ade of the historical building.\u00a0 For this exposure, I placed the yellow exposure circle on the sky (just outside the top of the frame) this has dropped the overall light level of the image and drawn attention to the reflected patterns.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/vsco_0_lowres.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4228\" title=\"vsco_0_lowres\" src=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/vsco_0_lowres.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Add a human touch<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Adding a person to your image helps create scale within the scene.\u00a0 It gives the viewer a point of reference with which they can measure the architectural elements.\u00a0 I often find myself waiting for a figure to walk through the scene.\u00a0 I also search out silhouettes, as they help add drama to the composition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_4355_lowres.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4227\" title=\"IMG_4355_lowres\" src=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_4355_lowres.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_4358_lowres.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4230\" title=\"IMG_4358_lowres\" src=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_4358_lowres.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>Stack those layers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m always on the lookout for interesting layers within the urban environment.\u00a0 Try and be aware what\u2019s happening at different distances when composing an image.\u00a0In the example below, I\u2019ve placed the figures in the foreground, the stairs in the middle and the building in the background.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_4359_lowres.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4229\" title=\"IMG_4359_lowres\" src=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/IMG_4359_lowres.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are a number of inspiring architectural mobile photographers.\u00a0 One of my favourites is <a href=\"http:\/\/instagram.com\/_lynettejackson\">Lynette Jackson<\/a> who uses graphic elements to add a new interpretation to the medium.\u00a0\u00a0 You can also find interesting images under the #architecturedesign and #architecture_masters tags.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ProCamera is available from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/procamera\/id694647259?pt=949580\/appstorect=appstore\/appstoremt8\/appstoreuo=4\/appstoreat=11laV7\">AppStore<\/a>\u00a0for US $4.99.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"&quot;AppStore&quot;\" href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/procamera\/id694647259?pt=949580\/appstorect=appstore\/appstoremt8\/appstoreuo=4\/appstoreat=11laV7\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.procamera-app.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/020713_0303_MobilePhoto3.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While I\u2019m a street photographer at heart, I often find myself drawn to the structure and form of architectural photography.
