Raw capture and editing opens up a whole new area for iPhone photography. Having access to the raw sensor data allows for even more creative freedom in post-processing.<\/h1>\n

Based on the\u00a0feedback in the last couple of days, it seems like you are just as excited about the new possibilities of RAW as we are.\u00a0In this post, we want to outline the current status of RAW in iOS\/ProCamera<\/strong>:<\/h2>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”47688″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” css_animation=”fadeIn”][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. We are happy to introduce RAW capture and editing on all devices with a 12 MP camera<\/strong>. That’s the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus. The front-facing camera is not supported.
    <\/div><\/li>\n
  2. RAW photos are saved in the DNG<\/strong> file format (lossless compression) and are\u00a0about 10-12 MB<\/strong>\u00a0in size.
    <\/div><\/li>\n
  3. Currently, a separate JPEG file<\/strong> is always saved along with the RAW photo (.DNG).
    <\/div><\/li>\n
  4. In the iOS Photos app and the ProCamera albums, RAW photos are displayed in preview size\/quality<\/strong>. The actual RAW file holds the full 12 MP data \u2013 even though some EXIF-viewers only display the pixel resolution of the small embedded preview JPEG.
    <\/div><\/li>\n
  5. Since RAW files always make use of the full sensor (4:3), zoom is disabled<\/strong> and deviating capture formats<\/strong> like 16:9 or 1:1 only affect the appendant JPEG file.
    <\/div><\/li>\n
  6. RAW files contain the unprocessed sensor data<\/strong>. When any kind of image processing happens in the background, where the data from the sensor is being interpreted\/altered, it makes no sense to convert the file back into some kind of RAW file format afterwards. Unprocessed sensor data and automatic image processing contradict each other<\/strong>. This affects the HDR and LowLight Plus camera modes, as well as the iOS image stabilization:
    <\/div>
    \n– When shooting RAW photos, no iOS image stabilization and processing<\/strong> is applied. You get the unaltered\u00a0sensor data. When shooting handheld in low light situations,\u00a0you might get better results with the JPEG\/TIFF file format, due to the internal stabilization\/optimization. Automatic Image Stabilization (software) and Optical Image Stabilization (hardware) work hand in hand on devices capable of both. You can’t have one without the other.
    \nOur Anti-Shake<\/strong> feature, which\u00a0delays the capture\u00a0until the device is held steady, works with the RAW file format. Its mechanism helps you get sharp photos by avoiding camera shake.
    <\/div>
    \n– When switching to HDR<\/strong> or LowLight Plus<\/strong> camera mode, where RAW capture is not supported, the file format will automatically switch to JPEG. If you have selected RAW files in settings, the app will automatically switch back to RAW capture, once you enter a camera mode that supports this file type.
    <\/div><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    [\/vc_column_text][vc_text_separator title=”How To Switch The File Fomat” color=”green” style=”dashed”][vc_column_text]In ProCamera v10.0, we have introduced an additional way to check and\/or change the file format<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Traditional way:<\/em>\u00a0Open Control Panel (three lines icon, bottom right) > Settings > Photo Mode Options: File format.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text]New way:<\/em> Open the\u00a0Control Panel. In the bottom left corner, the present\u00a0file format is displayed. It’s also handy for checking if you are currently shooting RAW photos \u2013 \u00a0or if RAW capture is supported in the current\u00a0camera configuration in the first place.
    \nTap the file format to toggle between all available file format options on your device\/in this camera configuration (camera mode, active lens)[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”47683″ img_size=”full” alignment=”right” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeIn”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=”Editing Raw Files” color=”green” style=”dashed”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]The Editing Suite of ProCamera now also supports RAW files on all devices capable of shooting RAW photos. Once again, this means iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, SE, 7, and 7 Plus.<\/p>\n

    When editing, RAW files (.DNG) remain untouched<\/strong>. Edited versions of the capture will be saved as a\u00a0new\u00a0JPEG files<\/strong>. You will notice that the RAW editing in ProCamera includes brand new adjustment tools\u00a0in an additional fifth section called “RAW” (icon bottom left).\u00a0Of course, you can also utilize\u00a0the regular ProCamera editing tools for your RAW files \u2013 or send the RAW\u00a0file to Photoshop CC on your desktop computer.<\/p>\n

    How To:<\/em> Open a RAW photo in the ProCamera gallery and tap \u201cEdit\u201d. In the ProCamera albums, RAW files have a visible “RAW” marking.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”47665″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”right” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeIn”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=”Special Characteristics of the iPhone 7 Plus” color=”green” style=”dashed”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”47457″ img_size=”medium” onclick=”link_image” css_animation=”fadeIn”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]The iPhone 7 Plus<\/strong> is the first iOS device with a dual camera system. Therefore, this device has\u00a0some unique\u00a0characteristics and settings.<\/p>\n

    With two simple taps, you can quickly switch between the Wide, the Tele, and the Dual lens<\/strong>\u00a0mode\u00a0of the iPhone 7 Plus.\u00a0You will also feel the lens switch with haptic feedback.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Since the Dual lens camera mode automatically merges the data of the two lenses\/sensors, RAW capture is only available with either the Wide or the Tele lens<\/strong> \u2013 not the Dual lens mode.
